We were rigged and ready for 09:00 this morning, a miracle given Stew is not a morning person. Think he forgot almost every piece of kit, circling back about 5 times to get his radio, or camera, or whatever. Despite our best efforts however there was not enough wind to get going. The beach at Salthouse was very steep, going up in a step like fashion. So in an attempt to catch as much of the offshore breeze as posible we launched from the highest point, but by the time we walked down to the water’s edge, even with the kite at 12:00 above our heads, there wasn’t enough to pull us out of the water. In blind hope that the wind would pickup, we waited for ~90minutes, until hot and a little dehydrated we finally gave into the fact it wasn’t picking up.
Lunch, a nap and we tried again. It was just that tiny bit more than in the morning which allowed us to get going. Patchy, at times we were lolling around in the water waiting for the next band of wind to come in to allow us to carry on. Besides the lulls we had batch after batch of crab pots to contend with. The fishermen mark their pots with different flags to distinguish from one another’s pots, some have small black and yellow flags on a long pole, others have red and blue etc. Often there was a floating line between two sets of flags marking where the pot was on the sea bed. A perfect trap for a foilboarder. On at least three occasions one of us got tangled in these lines, causing the board to come to an abrupt stop as the line hit the shaft and the rider, continuing forward found themselves face planting into the water, having to swim back to detangle the board, and sometimes themselves without skewering the kite on one of the flag poles. Eventually, at Trimingham, the wind gave in, and our day came to an end. Ten miles up the coast, not a lot, but at least some progress.

Fun Fact: RAF Trimingham has a giant golf-ball shaped radar dome, which in November 2006 fell “out of allignment” causing speedometers on nearby cars to suddenly jump to 150mph, and their engines and lights to cut out.
