Hanging out at Monkey Bar until 03:30am, chatting to new friends about old kitesurfing adventures would not have been my usual prep for a long kiting journey. But when we woke up on our last full day of the holiday, the wind looked good, and we’d still been unable to complete any serious traveling (the main goal when we were originally planning this two week break).
Rigging up the kites on the beach we were unsure if we’d even get out the bay as the wind was stronger than we’d usually go out in on the kites we had with us. Having been forecasted for stronger wind, we’d not organised boat support, so we plotted a course from beach to beach along the coast, ensuring we knew of all the possible landing areas in case they were needed.
Stew was on the edge with full depower so we took it a bit at a time, while aiming in the back of our minds for Goodman’s Bay, where we’d agreed to meet our friends from the night before (albeit at the time we’d assumed we’d drive there, not kite). Once there, we did a quick flyby to say hi, before deciding the wind had dropped just enough for us to continue on towards Paradise Island (P.I.)
This extended route took us past the island which was once Coral World, where I have fond memories as a child going on school visits to see the vast aquariums of fish; pools where you could pickup starfish and feel their little feet trying to walk across your hand; and my all time favourite, feeding the sting rays and that slurping feeling as they took the food straight out your palm. We found more kiters launching off P.I. where we took a brief break to message home to say where we were and what time to expect us back (a safety precaution that has been drilled into me since I was young). My brother had messaged to say he was coming for dinner, so I knew Mummy would be cooking something good!
The way back, downwind all the way, was a lot easier on the legs than the way up, and it seemed like we were home in no time. Our longest journey to date, what a great way to end the holiday!
