From the longest day yesterday to the shortest today, we’re definitely anything but consistent. Just as we launched this morning we could hear the church bells chiming 09:00. The church spire had been our goal for the last part of yesterday, watching as it gradually grew larger willing ourselves to continue that tiny bit longer so we could get there.
The forecast for today was a bit iffy, but we still went out early to give it a try. Unfortunately what little wind there was just kept dropping. I started on the 9m in hopes that there would be wind once we got out the bay but was too under powered. Having to constantly work the kite, diving it then sending it back up to the top of the window. This was the last thing my shoulders and biceps wanted to do this morning after the workout they got yesterday. We were making little progress despite the tide being in our favour, so when Stew went into a hole and his kite dropped out the sky I tried swapping to the 11m, then the 15m. Even the bigger kites didn’t help, you can see from the map we were almost making faster progress upwind when the kites were in the water (because of the tide) than we were when we were moving. In the end we had to call it a day. Shame as we were hoping to make it past Wicklow today as the around Ireland race starts tomorrow, with ~70 boats heading south towards us. It doesn’t start until 14:00 so hopefully we can get out their way before then.
Why does sound travel so well across water?
Sound travels slower at lower temperatures. The sea, which takes a long time to cool down after the winter, cools off air close to it’s surface causing sound to travel slower there than higher up, where it’s warmer. This difference in speed causes the expanding sphere of sound to change shape, flattening it into a wall or even focusing the sound downwards. This along with the sea’s sometimes smooth surface causes less of the sound to be lost into the air and allows it to travel further. This affect, but in the reverse is what causes mirages in the dessert.
