There were small puffs of wind in the bay on Friday morning, but in the lulls, there wasn’t enough to even get the kite in the sky. Drills done, we spent a lovely afternoon up at Dover Castle. A strategic fort since roman times, this has seen a lot of history. The oldest building was a Roman lighthouse built 45-50AD – making it UK’s oldest lighthouse building (we pass the oldest operating lighthouse, Bell Rock, later in the trip), with the main castle built by King Henry II in the 12th Century. I hadn’t realised how colourful they’d painted their furniture, felt more like a primary school classroom with all the primary colours than an ancient castle. The section I enjoy the most however, were the tunnels used in both World Wars. We joined the second to last tour of the day, which ended up being just us. Our guide was so passionate about the site that what should have been a 45 minute tour, took us well over an hour. Fascinating how the landing at Dunkirk was planned from deep under the cliffs here, right next to corridors of underground hospital beds and rooms of old radio equipement.
