With the tide slightly later this morning, I had a chance to explore the town in search of tonight’s dinner. When we were here in April, it was a beautiful sunny day and we saw dolphins out in the bay. I had a look for them this morning but nothing but a wide expanse of glittering sea. Speaking to the Harbour master, he thinks the dolphins are becoming more common in this area. He used to work on a 70′ fishing trawler out of Peterhead and said there was a two week period when a Minke whale had come alongside the boat every morning and rubbed itself along the hull. Like clockwork it was there every morning at 06:00. That must have been so cool! Sadly we’ve had no such friend follow us around the coast. Did see a dolphin playing in the surf later in the day though, so they’re obviously out there.
On arrival into Abroath we just had enough time to explore the signal museum. There is a reef 11miles offshore of the town, which before the building of Bell Rock lighthouse made the town, and the whole Firth of Tay a dangerous place to navigate. On a good day the lighthouse and the signal station just outside the harbour could communicate via flags or visual signals. On a plaque outside it explains that if the lighthouse keeper had a child they’d hoist a dress to indicate the safe arrival of a new baby girl, or a pair of trousers if it was a boy. What a way to find out!
