We weren’t sure if we’d get around today, as the forecast was light, but we were keen to give it a try anyway! My parents, exploring the local area by car, were hoping to wave at us from the Cape Wrath Lighthouse, the most north-westerly point of Great Britain. What they hadn’t accounted for was the fact that the 11mile road to the light hasn’t been paved since the 1960s, so was extremely bumpy. With the last section only accessible by ferry, so by the time they’d arrived at ~13:00 we were almost half way to Scrabster, where we eventually had to finish for the day. I was sad to stop, having finally made friends with the 15m kite again. It had been a flat calm day, with perfectly steady wind, for such a traditionally stormy section of the coast it had been very easy going. But we’d arrived just at the wrong state of tide, and the next section, going around the Pentland Firth, needed to be timed perfectly. So we decided to pack up and call it a day.
Just as I was about to drop my kite two harbour porpoises popped up to say hello, followed by a Skua which kept looking at us hopeful for some food. I’d spent the whole day scanning the horizon in hopes of seeing some whales, but as soon as I stopped looking, the wildlife had found me. Funny how that happens sometimes.
The name of the headland derives, not from the stormy waters of the area but from the Norse word for a “turning point”, for here the Norsemen turned their ships to head home.
Established in the 1930s, Cape Wrath is the only ship-to-shore bombardment range in Europe. Taking up 8,308 acre, it is also the largest bombing range in Europe, and the only one where 1000 pound bombs can be dropped. It includes Cllo Mor, the highest sea cliffs in Britain
