I need to get over my aversion to the 15m kite. I’ve developed this fear of the wind picking up beyond my comfort zone, and the feeling of being stretched like Mrs Incredible (without the super powers) into a human slingshot, every arm and back muscle being extended to their max and it taking all my energy to try to keep them squeezed into their sockets. All this only to have the tension released as I’m catapulted down the front of a wave, to start the process all over again. In fairness, the last two times I could have easily been on a 7m instead of the 15m, so it’s not really the kite’s fault, more ensuring you’re on the correct equipment for the conditions. For us, it takes 30 minutes+ to swap kites, so once we’re going we try as much as possible to continue on what equipment we have.
Today, there was no chance of being over powered, as we set off it was on the boarder of being possible on either the 12m or the 15m. I incorrectly chose to use the 12m, but within 20 minutes I was struggling to get going and needed the bigger size. Shortly even this wasn’t enough, and we had to pack up and call it a day after only 2hours, having not even made it to Cape Wrath.
It was a long motor back to Kinlochbervie, the 3knot tide was going against us on the way back, as we’d planned it so that it would be taking us North and around the Cape if we’d been kiting, but now it hindered our progress back to port. Once there my parents joined us for a full Scottish breakfast, including of course a good portion of Haggis, before we went for an explore to Shegra.
We found the most beautiful beach, complete with public toilets and large bins. Stew was ready to take his beach cleaning gear, but in general we’ve found that spots which are common to visitors are generally pretty clean, so we left our bags behind. Mistake. Up along the high water mark we found the usual spattering of fishing line, crisps packets and plastic. We bundled as much as we could into pouches to take away with us, but had to leave a lot where we found it. I was able to pass on one big piece of plastic to a dog owner who’d forgotten their doggie poop bag, so at least we were able to reuse something.
With the tide all the way out, the beach below the high water line was like a jellyfish graveyard. You could see these shinny mounds of clear wobbly substances dotted across the white sand. Most of them were the “traditional” ones, with the three/four circles of intestine on their tops, but sprinkled between these were these beautiful purple stars. It was like a child had come around with that geometric drawing tool “Spirograph” we had when were kids, and a purple pen to draw these elaborate flowers on the top of each jelly. The purple was a rich colour, similar to a thistle, each with a unique pattern. They were stunning!
While there are more than 200 species of jellyfish, just six of them are routinely found in UK waters
The uncoiling of the jellyfish’s small stingers is one of the fastest actions in nature. Stingers shoot out even faster than a bullet from a gun.
The Lion’s mane jellyfish is one of the largest of the true jellyfish and can have tentacles up to 120 feet (36.6 m) in length — that’s longer than the average blue whale. Its bell can measure up to 7 feet, 6 inches (2.3 m) across. It lives in oceans around the world and feeds on small fish, shrimp, and other small jellyfish.
One species of jellyfish (not found in the UK), the Turritopsis nutricula, is also known as the “immortal jellyfish” because it can transform from the mature medusa state back to the polyp (jovenille) state, thereby essentially avoiding death. It accomplishes this through the cell development process called transdifferentiation.
