Both wind and tide lined up for an early start. First light was 4:15, so we set our alarms for 3:30, enough time to make porridge and get ready before setting off. This was our earliest start yet and only our second passage in the dark (the first being a late finish into Eastbourne). Leaving Portland Harbour, it looked like someone had dropped a string of fairy lights on the far hill, which I assume was Osmington Mills. In front of us was a tanker with two large cats eyes staring at us from it’s bridge. We’d already done this trip twice before checking for wind, but its amazing how different it can look in the dark.
We were rigged and on the water for sunrise at 5:30. Heading towards our friends at Salcombe Gin Co. The wind with tide at Portland Bill made it hard to launch our kites, but once up there was finally enough wind. A massive relief after being becalmed for a week.
We set the course, heading as far downwind as possible on a single tack in an attempt to make as much progress across the bay as possible in case the wind dropped. It was so large it was a good 3 hours before land started to reappear in front of us. Stew and Islay took turns guessing what headland it was. Stew over optimistically thought it was Start Point, before Joe confirmed we were closer to Dartmouth. Switching to twin tips, as the wind had picked up, we managed to get in close to Start Point lighthouse, the name of Salcombe’s award winning gin. We gave it a good wave before rounding the bend and heading into Salcombe itself. If you’ve never been, really recommend it. A beautiful picturesque town with an active sailing community, lots of fishing boats, and the best Gin School, which we’re excited to be visiting tomorrow!
