I’ve been in contact with my old school in hopes to arrange a visit on our way past. We had a grand plan that we could kite into the beach, and walk up the tunnel that connects the school to the beach through the cliff. And then possibly do a kite demonstration afterwards. However, logistics on this trip have proven difficult. Judging where we’ll be at the end of any one day is hard enough, let alone planning any further.
Given today was forecast for little to no wind, I headed over (by train) for a visit. What a fun experience! I hadn’t been back for about 10 years, and I turned into one of those “old people” I remember walking around the corridors saying “when I was young”.
The highlight of the day was when my PE teacher brought her year 8s down to the green where they all took turns trying on my harness (which was at least 3 sizes too big on each of them), and I demonstrated how the kite worked. Great to see all the enthusiasm for a new sport. Exactly why we chose to support the Armada Trust as one our our charities.
I took the bus back via Seaford, a real trip down memory lane. I used to take this same bus most weekends during my final years at school to visit Megan’s grandmother who was half way between our two schools and who always treated us to a hearty home cooked meal, and a welcome break. I’d only seen her once since leaving, and was surprised my feet still knew the way to her house after so long. It was like nothing had changed, I spent the afternoon filling her in on our trip and catching up on the latest from Megan’s various british cousins, before her aunt dropped me home – A little later than I had origiinally expected, and I almost missed the only work meeting I had to take during my sabattical.
