We’ve been having some issues with the port engine periodically cutting out. For the last 3 days we’ve needed to clean the fuel filters each day. Not just a tedious exercise, but at ~ £20 each, replacing these daily would get expensive, quick. The concensus had finally been reached that we had a case of “The Diesl Bug”. Although it sounds like an arch enemy of Captain Planet, along with Sly Sludge or Captain Pollutant, this is a common issue with diesl engines that have been sitting unused for a while. When your fuel tank isn’t completely full, the moisture in the air can condensate, leaving a small film of water at the top of the tank between the air and the diesel. Microbial organisms can then grow in this space, which, when they die, sink to the bottom of the tank creating a residue. The more water, the more “bugs”, the older the tank the more sludge. You can get additives to your tank that kill these microbials, but you also have to be careful using these as this may temporarily increase the amount of slime that then can create blockages in pipes etc.
With light wind forecast, we arranged with the local fuel dock to use their bowser (fuel container), fuel filter and pump to try and clean the tanks. Stew and Joe started at 06:00 this morning, and with 4 tanks on the boat each with ~600 litres of fuel, they only finished at 20:00. A long day of scrubbing covered in diesel. Thank goodness Dover had good shower and laundry facilties!
While the two boys were scrubbing, Oscar, Jeremy, Stew’s Dad Bob, Val and I all went for a lovely walk to South Forelands lighthouse, where we enjoyed a scrumptious cream tea, Oscar’s first. They’d run out of regular scones, so we had to make do with cheese ones. Still tasted good covered with jam and clotted cream. We definitely got the better end of that deal! Fingers crossed the scrubbing was worth it, and we got rid of most of the diesel bug. Don’t want it to be my turn scrubbing next time 🙂
