The aim for today was to get from Harwich, where we finished on Friday’s epic 100km day, to Clacton-on-Sea, with the aim of getting around to Ramsgate on Monday. With this plan, we left Shotley Marina around 08:30 and headed back to the beach we’d previously finished on. There was absolutely nothing. Even the dandylions on the grass by the beach huts weren’t moving. We’d got into our (wet, because they’d been cleaned the day before) wetsuits for nothing. So back we headed, but this time to moor alongside Harwich pier, on the other side of the River Stour from where we were last night.
What a beautiful town. It’s home to the East Coast division of Trinity House, a charity that maintains a large number of the buoys we’ve been using to navigate by. These will be especially useful tomorrow as we cross the Thames Estuary, when there may be times we can’t see the other side, so will need to buoy hop our way across.
The river has also been silting up, so there are a number of light houses which look to be in the wrong locations. Often into harbours you can have two light houses at different heights, which when lined up to make a straight line, mean you’re on course to safely make the harbour entrance. There were two cast iron ones which lead us perfectly to the beach we finished at on Friday. There were another two even further away from the harbour. These light houses once did mark the entrance to the harbour but over time, the river mouth has moved, and these are now known as the “Misleading lights of Harwich”.
As we were playing tourist, we came across a lovely group of Rotarians on a treasure hunt. What a cool way to explore a new city. We’re going to have to try this at one of the next ports we come to! We were unfortunately unable to help them with “A foreign coin”, but were later able to barter with the Dutch Ketch moored next to us to help solve this piece of their puzzle. Teamwork! Or not, as I got evil glares as I rushed into the pub with the coin as they were tallying the scores and pushed our team one ahead of their rivals.
